Job Description
Dis-Chem Pharmacies’ Three Rivers store is seeking a Dispensary Support staff member. This fixed-term role is designed for learners enrolled in the basic pharmacist assistant course, providing hands-on experience in pharmaceutical operations. Upon successful completion and registration with the South African Pharmacy Council (SAPC) as a learner basic assistant, permanent employment may be offered.
Minimum Requirements
Essential:
- Grade 12 / Matric or Senior Certificate with at least 50% in Pure Mathematics, Life Science, or Physical Science, and an overall average of 50%
Job Specification
Dispensary Support staff must complete a proficiency test allowing registration with SAPC as a learner basic assistant. Under direct supervision of a pharmacist, responsibilities include:
- Assisting with the sale of Schedule 1 medicines and scheduled substances
- Supporting the compounding, manipulation, or preparation of non-sterile medicines according to approved formulas and SOPs
- Unpacking, merchandising, and cleaning dispensary and OTC shelves
- Accurately picking, packing, labelling, and checking medication while ensuring pharmacist verification
- Learning to interpret prescriptions professionally and within legal requirements
- Assisting in stock control, including shelf organization and monitoring expiry dates of Schedule 1–5 medicines
- Following up with patients on prescription tracking and appointments
- Handling call centre scripts and patient service calls
- Providing health information to individuals
- Assisting with scheme authorization for chronic, HIV/AIDS, and oncology medication
- Reporting low stock, stock errors, and receiving dispensary stock according to SOPs
- Performing other duties assigned by the Dispensary Manager
Competencies
Essential:
- Proficient in English and a second language
- Strong time management, attention to detail, and ability to work under pressure
- Excellent communication, customer service, problem-solving, teamwork, and professional conduct
- Computer literacy and numerical skills
Advantageous:
- Retail or FMCG experience, preferably in a Dis-Chem front shop
- Knowledge of drug and family planning, complementary medicine
- Familiarity with Unisolv, SAP, and E-Scripting systems
Special Conditions of Employment:
- Successful completion of proficiency test for SAPC registration
- South African citizen
- Clear criminal and credit record
